Dado Wins MFBF Collegiate Discussion Meet

The Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) hosted the 13th annual Minnesota Collegiate Discussion Meet. The competition was held as part of the 99th MFBF Annual Meeting at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington.

This year's winner was Trent Dado of Amery, Wisconsin attending the University of Minnesota -- Twin Cities studying animal science. The runner-up was A.J. Quade from Westbrook in Cottonwood County attending Ridgewater College studying agribusiness with a crops emphasis.

Undergraduate students qualified at regional competitions held at South Central College-Mankato, Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU)-Marshall, Ridgewater College-Willmar, University of Minnesota (U of M)-Crookston and U of M-Twin Cities. Two from each college competition advanced to the state meet.

Students participated in two rounds and a final and were judged on their basic knowledge of critical farm issues and their ability to exchange ideas and information in a setting aimed at cooperative problem solving. The final round question discussed by the contestants was:

- How can Farm Bureau help members with increasing legal and regulatory obstacles so they can focus on farming and ranching?

The state winner receives an expense paid trip from the Minnesota Farm Bureau Foundation sponsored by Christensen Farms to the American Farm Bureau Federation's (AFBF) Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) Conference in Reno, Nev., Feb. 16-19, to participate in the national competition. The winner also receives a $500 scholarship and the runner-up a $250 scholarship from the Minnesota Farm Bureau Foundation sponsored by Gislason & Hunter.

Other finalists included Asa Nelson from Tracy in Lyon County attending SMSU majoring in agriculture and Amber Johnson of Sebeka in Wadena County attending U of M-Crookston studying agricultural education.
