Emergency Management Researcher to Discuss Disasters

Y. "Gurt" Ge, assistant professor of emergency management at North Dakota State University, has been selected to participate in a two-workshop series sponsored by the National Science Foundation's Infrastructure Management and Extreme Events Program. The series aims to bring together scholars to advance interdisciplinary research for hazards and disasters.

The field of hazards and disaster research has become more interdisciplinary over the past several decades. Ge has conducted research in emergency management through interdisciplinary collaborations with transportation engineers, construction engineers, computer scientists and engineers, economist, urban planners and communication specialists. His research has been funded by NSF, NASA and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Ge will join the first workshop at the National Science Foundation on March 30 and 31. He will present a preliminary manuscript on an inventory of existing and emerging interdisciplinary-specific methods and approaches used in hazards and disaster research. His paper, along with other working papers discussed at the first workshop, will contribute to an upcoming special issue of Risk Analysis, a peer-reviewed journal ranked among the top 10 journals in the Institute for Scientific Information Journal Citation Reports in the social sciences, mathematical methods category.
