New Professional Science Master's Degree in Bioscience Management
Nebraska Ag Connection - 02/24/2009
Creighton University will offer a Professional Science Master's (PSM) degree in bioscience management beginning in June 2009.
"This program, one of only four programs of its kind in the United States, addresses a serious issue," said Anthony Hendrickson, Ph.D., Creighton University School of Business dean. "We need more
graduates with expertise in science, math and technology who can translate that knowledge into business opportunities and Creighton is in a unique position to meet this important need."
The Sloan Foundation, National Science Foundation and National Council on Graduate Education all endorse the Professional Science Master's degree as necessary to sustaining U.S. competitiveness in the
sciences.
The interdisciplinary degree, directed by Anne York, Ph.D., associate professor of entrepreneurship, will provide graduate students and working professionals the opportunity to study how science and
business intersect. Targeted at professionals in health care and science-related fields, the program will be offered on weekends over 15 months in a team-based environment.
The program consists of a core of six courses including technology, commercialization, bioscience business planning, law and regulatory issues. Depending on a student's background, an additional four
elective courses in either business or bioscience will be required. Relevant topic areas include the application of biology used in agriculture, food science or medicine. Creighton faculty from science, health
science, law and business will conduct courses focused on the skills needed to successfully manage science-based organizations.

Over the past year, Creighton has partnered with the University of Nebraska Medical Center to launch a cutting edge, cross-disciplinary, NSF-funded Bioscience Entrepreneurship Program (BEP) to train
law, health science, science and business students in technology commercialization in the life sciences (please see www.creighton.edu/business/bep for additional information). This unique program serves as
the centerpiece of the new Professional Science Master's degree in bioscience management.
