U.S. Crops Outpace Long-Term Averages

U.S. farmers report 53 percent of corn acreage has been planted against a five-year average of 27 percent by this week of the year.

Farmers report 15 percent of the crop has emerged, putting that ahead of the five-year average of 6 percent by this week of the year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its weekly report.

Farmers also report they are ahead of long-term averages in planting for cotton, soybeans, sorghum, peanuts, sugarbeets, rice, oats, barley and spring wheat.

At this week of the year, on average 24 percent of the winter wheat crop has headed out. This year, farmers report 54 percent of the winter wheat crop has headed out as of the week ending Sunday.
