Recall Leads to Permanent Closing of Michigan Facility
USAgNet - 12/18/2009
In the wake of a September recall of almost 40,000 lbs. of ready-to-eat meal kits, due to listeria concerns, Big Boy Restaurants Inc. said it is permanently closing a processing facility in Warren, Mich., and
laying off 88 workers.
The company sent a letter earlier this month to the state Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth announcing the layoffs, as required by federal law, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press.
The company had suspended its operations in October, as it sought the source of the listeria contamination. In its letter to the state, Big Boy said it had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars doing so, and
that the source of the contamination was equipment the company had bought from a customer, according to a report in Crain's Detroit Business.
The company told the state that it was not economically feasible to correct the problem and resume operations.
