USAgNet - 02/28/2017

Ray Starling, who has been the chief of staff to Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., will serve as special assistant to President Donald Trump for agriculture, trade and food assistance at the White House National Economic Council, Gary Cohn, director of the council, announced on Monday.

Starling also served as Tillis' chief counsel and then-Speaker Tillis' general counsel and senior agriculture adviser in the North Carolina General Assembly. He has been the general counsel for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, worked in private law practice for Hunton & Williams, a Richmond, Va.-based firm with offices around the world, and has taught agricultural and food law courses. After growing up on a farm in southeast North Carolina, he received a bachelor of science in agricultural education from North Carolina State University and a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The National Pork Producers Council praised the Starling appointment.

"Growing up raising hogs on a farm in North Carolina that his family continues to operate today, Ray's long, distinguished career in agriculture policy has always been informed by a deep understanding of pork producers and a sector so vital to our economy and national security," NPPC President John Weber said.
