Bayer partners with AlphaBio to launch innovative bioinsecticide by 2028

USAgNet - 04/25/2024

Bayer has recently entered into a significant agreement with AlphaBio Control, a move that grants them exclusive rights to a pioneering bioinsecticide aimed at arable crops like oilseed rape and cereals. This collaboration marks a strategic step towards integrating more sustainable and effective pest management solutions in agriculture, with a planned launch in 2028.

The new product, developed by AlphaBio, represents the first of its kind for some crops and is part of Bayer’s broader initiative to support regenerative agriculture practices. Benoit Hartmann, Head of Biologics at Bayer’s Crop Science Division, highlighted the importance of innovative solutions to meet the dual challenges of climate change and global food security.

This bioinsecticide specifically targets coleoptera insects such as the cabbage stem flea beetle, which poses a significant threat to rapeseed crops (such as Canola). Its damage can severely stunt plant growth, but this new solution promises to mitigate these impacts effectively.

Marta Ruiz, General Manager at AlphaBio Control, expressed enthusiasm about providing Bayer with exclusive rights to this bioinsecticide, which is anticipated to enhance the environmental sustainability of food production.

The use of biological products in cash crop farming has been limited due to cost challenges associated with large-scale application. However, Bayer plans to incorporate this insecticide into a comprehensive, digitally-supported pest management system to optimize cost-efficiency and efficacy.

Ralf Glaubitz, Head of Global Asset Management for Seed Growth & Biologics at Bayer, stressed the growing demand for biological crop protection. He outlined ambitious goals for Bayer to expand its biologics market share, aiming to generate significant sales by 2035.

This initiative also aligns with Bayer's commitment to reduce the environmental footprint of its crop protection products by 30% by 2030, striving for a balance between environmental sustainability and maintaining high crop yields and health.
