The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Action for Healthy Kids recently announced the first recipients of the Healthy Meals Incentives Recognition Awards, showcasing the innovative strides made by school districts in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, and Ohio towards improving student nutrition. These awards, part of the larger Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative, underline the Biden-Harris Administration's commitment to fostering healthier eating habits among children through school meal programs.

At a national conference attended by school nutrition professionals, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack praised the awarded districts for their creative approaches to menu improvements, including reducing sodium and introducing locally sourced, culturally relevant ingredients. These districts, alongside 260 others, were also beneficiaries of HMI grants aimed at enhancing the nutritional value of school meals.

Highlighted initiatives include Clear Lake Community School District's (Iowa) use of custom spice blends and local produce, Sandy Valley Local School District's (Ohio) efforts in scratch cooking and student-involved menu planning, Petersburg School District's (Alaska) incorporation of local and traditional foods into meals, and Regional School Unit 89's (Maine) focus on homemade and locally sourced menu items. These programs not only provide healthier meal options but also educate students on nutrition and the importance of local agriculture.

These recognitions spotlight the essential role that school meals play in children's health and the innovative ways schools are engaging students and communities in nutritional education. The USDA continues to support such initiatives through the Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative, aligning with the White House's broader strategy on hunger, nutrition, and health. Schools interested in enhancing their meal programs are encouraged to apply for the Recognition Awards, with applications reviewed through June 2025.
