Next big step - Ethanol in aviation fuel
USAgNet - 03/11/2024
In the heart of southeast Iowa, farmer Dan Keitzer eyes the horizon for ethanol's new role in aviation, a sector ripe for revolution. The U.S. government's ambitious goal for the airline industry to incorporate three billion gallons of sustainable aviation fuel by 2030 opens a vast market for ethanol, corn oil, and soybean oil. However, current Midwest ethanol, primarily sourced from corn, falls short in meeting the required low carbon standards for aviation fuel.
At the Commodity Classic in Houston, Keitzer, representing the Iowa Corn Growers Association, shared his vision and the challenges ahead. Despite the hurdles, the potential for ethanol to power flights is monumental. Should ethanol qualify, capturing even 30% of the sustainable aviation fuel market could skyrocket corn demand by over 800 million bushels annually. This advancement could mark a significant "ah ha" moment for ethanol and corn producers alike, setting the stage for a greener future in aviation and beyond.
