Today marks a historic victory for environmental conservation as the administration announces the finalization of protections for the Thompson Divide, a key step in preserving Colorado's natural beauty and biodiversity. This decision, aligning with administration America the Beautiful initiative, prevents approximately 221,898 acres from mineral development, safeguarding the area's wildlife habitat, clean air and water, and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack have emphasized the importance of this action in supporting rural economies and conserving environmental values. The Thompson Divide is celebrated for its rich ranching heritage, significant wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities, contributing around $30 million annually to the local economy.

The protected area includes lands managed by the USDA Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), withdrawn from mining and mineral leasing laws for 20 years, with the possibility of renewal. This measure respects existing rights and does not impact activities on private lands or water rights.

The initiative has garnered widespread support through decades of grassroots efforts, reflecting a strong community and governmental commitment to preserving the area’s ecological and scenic values for generations to come. The withdrawal follows extensive public engagement and environmental assessment, incorporating feedback from over 31,000 comments.

This landmark decision underscores the administration's dedication to conservation and sustainable development, aiming to protect the lands and waters upon which we all depend. The Thompson Divide's protection is a testament to the power of locally led conservation efforts, ensuring that this cherished landscape remains a source of natural beauty and vitality for the future.
