USDA boosts clean energy with $238 million investment

USAgNet - 04/25/2024

In celebration of Earth Day 2024, Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small unveiled a major initiative under the USDA, committing $238 million to enhance clean energy infrastructure and biofuel accessibility across the United States. This initiative, funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, represents a historic push towards combating climate change while supporting American farms and small businesses.

The funding will be distributed through two primary programs - The Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) and the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program (HBIIP). REAP will receive over $194 million to aid projects in 35 states and Puerto Rico, focusing on technologies like solar, wind, and geothermal energy. These projects aim to lower energy costs, reduce dependency on non-renewable energy sources, and increase income for rural businesses.

Additionally, HBIIP will allocate more than $43 million to enhance the infrastructure necessary for expanding biofuel use in 15 states. This program supports the installation of new fuel pumps, storage tanks, and other equipment to facilitate increased biofuel distribution, directly benefiting rural economies by providing cleaner, more affordable fuel options.

These investments not only support the growth of renewable energy but also align with the administration's broader economic and environmental objectives. They are expected to create jobs, stimulate economic growth in agricultural markets, and build resilience in rural communities against climate impacts.

By funding these initiatives, the USDA underscores its commitment to fostering a more sustainable and equitable energy future, ensuring that rural America remains at the forefront of the nation’s transition towards a cleaner economy.
